- Program Description
-
The Special Education Teaching Bachelor's Program at the University of Cyprus was established in 2009 as the Department of Intellectual Disabilities Teaching, starting its educational activities with 58 students in its first year. In 2015, following a decision by the Higher Education Council (YÖK), the separate bachelor's programs for Intellectual Disabilities, Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments, and Giftedness/Talented Education were merged to create a new and single bachelor's program under the name of 'Special Education Teaching.' In the 2016-2017 academic year, the Special Education Teaching Program welcomed its first students.
During the 2021-2022 academic year, preparations for the accreditation process were initiated, and updates were made to the curriculum, course contents, course descriptions, course codes, and course levels (specific to the field, faculty, or university). The work to align the courses with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is being carried out in accordance with ongoing efforts at the department, faculty, and university levels.
Decisions regarding the program are made by the department board, which consists of the department chair, full-time faculty members, and teaching staff.
- Recognition Of Prior Learning
-
Full-time students at the University of Cyprus may be exempt from certain courses within the framework of the relevant regulation. If the content of a course previously taken at another institution is equivalent to a course offered in the Special Education Teaching Bachelor's Program at CIU, the course content will first be evaluated by the Head of the Special Education Teaching Department, then the Special Education Teaching Department's decision will be made, and finally, the student may be exempt from the course with the approval of the Faculty of Education's Board of Directors.
