- Program Description
-
Biotechnology is a scientific field that examines essential biological mechanisms in human, animal and plant cells by utilizing advancements in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, virology, nanotechnology, bioengineering and neuroscience. In addition, biotechnology aims to develop and use technologies so that cellular biological mechanisms can be altered for the betterment of human life in medicine, health sciences, agriculture, and industry. The aim of the master’s program is; to provide postgraduate students from various life sciences, clinical programs, engineering, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine theoretical and applied knowledge in biotechnology. The program aims to teach students the skills necessary to use biotechnological equipment and to conduct ethical, reproducible and rigorous research. With their theses, students will work to bring innovation to their relevant field and subfields, while developing new scientific methods or applying known methods to a new field.
- Recognition Of Prior Learning
- Full-time students at Cyprus International University may be exempted from certain courses in accordance with the relevant regulations. The conditions and procedures for exemption from one or more courses based on special student status, horizontal transfer, transfer of credits from a previously completed graduate program, or the results of an exemption examination are determined by the Institute Directorate after obtaining the opinion of the relevant Program Chair. The acceptance of a course submitted for equivalency is decided based on the student's grade, the course content, and the course credits. To be considered equivalent, the course content must correspond to at least 70% (seventy percent) of the content of the equivalent course offered by the University.
Objectives
Program Educational Objectives
- To work effectively as leaders and team members by applying technical expertise, scientific knowledge, and ethical principles in biotechnology.
- To plan, conduct, document, and communicate hypothesis-driven and laboratory-based research in biotechnology.
- To interpret and critically evaluate bioinformatics and genetic data generated from human research.
- To use and apply molecular, cellular, and genetic techniques in biotechnology research for medicine, health sciences, agriculture, and the food industry
- To apply knowledge of the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying human diseases in the evaluation of potential treatment approaches
- To interpret, synthesize, write, and communicate scientific information for both the scientific community and the general public.
- To provide training on the research, development, and production of products for biotechnology-related industrial fields in the public and private sector
- To apply ethical principles and professional responsibility in biotechnology research and practice
Program Profile
The Biotechnology Master’s Program at Cyprus International University is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to train well-rounded, technically skilled, ethical, and research-oriented scientists with a strong foundation in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, virology, nanotechnology, bioengineering, and neuroscience. The program provides students from life sciences, clinical sciences, engineering, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine with both theoretical and applied knowledge in biotechnology, while developing their ability to use biotechnological equipment, design and conduct rigorous research, analyze biological and genetic data, and communicate scientific findings effectively. The curriculum is structured as a full-time master’s program with a total of 120 ECTS and 21 local credits. Students complete compulsory courses such as Research Methods, Biotechnology, Biostatistics, Seminar, and Thesis, together with four area elective courses that allow specialization in fields such as cancer biology, neuroscience, reproductive biology, regenerative medicine, environmental biotechnology, bionanotechnology, food biotechnology, and the business of biotechnology. In the first semester, students complete four courses worth 32 ECTS, followed by second-semester coursework and seminar activities worth 28 ECTS, while the thesis component continues through the later stages of the program and carries 60 ECTS upon successful completion. To graduate, students must complete the required core and elective courses, achieve the necessary academic standing, and successfully defend their thesis. Through this structure, the program combines coursework, research training, scientific communication, and thesis-based specialization, preparing graduates for careers in R&D, clinical and medical analysis laboratories, pharmaceutical, agricultural, food, environmental, and biomedical companies, public-sector scientific committees, national and international research projects, academic research positions, and further doctoral studies
Admission and Graduation
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the biotechnology master's program students are required to make a successful thesis defense after completing two area core compulsory courses and four elective courses, in addition to seminar and research methods. Thus, students will be able to graduate with a total of 120 ECTS, including 21 credits after a successful thesis defense.
