- Program Description
-
Civil Engineering consists of the fields of construction, geotechnical skills, hydraulic transportation, construction management, and construction materials. The CIU Department of Civil Engineering has a strong national link with international presence. It has a leadership role as its laboratory facilities rank first among the other civil engineering departments in our country. It provides a quality education by using its physical infrastructure in the best way and giving prominence to the understanding of contemporary education.
After completing their first year in basic science courses, students take courses such as applied mechanics, construction, hydraulics, hydromechanics, topography, geotechnical engineering, transport engineering, materials, construction, and construction management. The academic program of Civil Engineering also includes mathematics, computer programming, and non-departmental social-based courses. In addition to their practical education in the department, students are encouraged to conduct theoretical research as well.
- Recognition Of Prior Learning
-
At International Cyprus University (CIU), full-time students may be exempt from certain courses within the framework of the relevant regulations. If the content of a course previously taken at another institution is equivalent to a course offered at CIU, the student may be granted an exemption from that course upon evaluation of the course content and approval from the relevant faculty/institute.
Objectives
Program Educational Objectives
- Carry out and develop the civil engineering profession at local, national, international companies or public institutions or by establishing their own engineering company.
- In their workplaces, they work for and achieve a decision-making position such as chief, manager, expert, etc.
- Improves self by such means as graduate study abroad or vocational training.
Program Profile
The Civil Engineering Department of CIU (International Cyprus University) began its education and training activities in 1997 after receiving approval from the Higher Education Council (YÖK). The department consists of the following main branches: Construction Materials, Construction Management, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Structures, and Transportation.
To complete the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, students must take courses totaling 143 credits (240 ECTS) and complete a compulsory 30-day construction site internship.
The department’s academic programs aim to develop students’ design and analysis abilities, management potential, and decision-making skills based on scientific and technical principles. These programs also aim to enhance students’ personal talents, entrepreneurship, and creativity, while ensuring they remain aware of current and contemporary technologies in the field of Civil Engineering.
The programs cover topics such as planning, design, analysis, construction, post-construction maintenance, and construction techniques. This knowledge is applied in the design and construction of various structures—such as buildings for different purposes, bridges, transportation facilities, energy and power plants, hydraulic structures, and other constructions that improve the quality of life in society.
After completing one year of basic science courses, students take applied courses in mechanics, structures, hydraulics, surveying, geotechnics, transportation, construction materials, and construction management. The Civil Engineering Department’s curriculum also includes courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, English, history, Turkish, computer programming, and other social science subjects outside the department. In addition to practical training, students are encouraged to conduct both applied and theoretical research.

Employments and Occupational Profiles
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Civil engineering graduates are obliged to develop an educational understanding that is close to that of the current market and be competent in adapting themselves to leadership and group work. Students graduating from this program have a wide range of career opportunities such as the construction of basic engineering buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, railways, airports, ports, sewerage networks, water treatment plants, dams, and lakes. They can work in public institutions, the private sector, or establish their own offices. Since the need for civil engineers will increase in the future, students have a high possibility of securing a livelihood.
Assessment and Learning
Exams, Assessment and Grading
The measurement and evaluation methods applied for each course are defined in the "Syllabus" prepared by the relevant faculty member/s and included in the Information package. Regarding exams and course grades, relevant articles of Cyprus International University Associate Degree, Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations are applied.
