Program Profile
The Child Development Department, operating under the School of Health Sciences at Cyprus International University, commenced its educational activities in the 2017-2018 academic year. Offering a four-year undergraduate program, the department aims to train specialists capable of managing children's healthy development processes based on scientific principles. The department's primary objective regarding children aged 0–18—whether typically developing, with special needs, in need of protection (due to neglect or abuse), hospitalized, or at risk—is to: • Assess their cognitive, linguistic, motor, social, and emotional development; • Design programs to support these developmental areas; • Provide professional consultancy services to families and educators. In line with its learning objectives, the department equips students with knowledge for both professional and personal growth through a combination of compulsory courses and electives tailored to their interests. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to practice various professional skills in a well-equipped laboratory environment. Following laboratory sessions, the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program are put into practice in educational institutions, hospitals, and special education centers. The Child Development Department continues to provide education at the undergraduate level through this four-year program.

Learning Taxonomy
The SOLO (Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes) Taxonomy is a five-level model developed by Biggs and Collis. It measures the quality and structural depth of students' understanding rather than just the quantity of information they retain. In applied academic programs like Child Development, it is widely used to evaluate how students progress from simple recall to abstract, critical thinking.Levels of the SOLO Taxonomy1. Pre-structural Level
- Characteristics: The student possesses disconnected or irrelevant pieces of information about the topic but does not grasp the core concept. Responses are often incorrect or missed entirely.
- Child Development Example: A student defining a "child with special needs" based purely on non-scientific, superstitious beliefs or hearsay rather than developmental criteria.
2. Uni-structural Level
- Characteristics: The student focuses on only one relevant aspect or dimension of the topic. They can make simple connections, name terms, or perform basic tasks.
- Child Development Example: A student memorizing and listing the names and age ranges of Piaget's stages of cognitive development without explaining what happens during those stages.
3. Multi-structural Level
- Characteristics: The student identifies multiple relevant aspects or components of a topic and can list them. However, these pieces of information remain disconnected; the student cannot see how they relate to one another or form a cohesive whole.
- Child Development Example: A student listing the physical, linguistic, and social-emotional characteristics of a 3-year-old child separately, but failing to explain how these domains influence each other.
4. Relational Level
- Characteristics: The student integrates the relevant pieces into a coherent structure. They understand the connections, analyze causes and effects, and compare different aspects of a topic to form a unified understanding.
- Child Development Example: A student analyzing how domestic violence (social environment) directly impairs a child's language acquisition and cognitive milestones, linking them through developmental theories into a comprehensive assessment.
5. Extended Abstract Level
- Characteristics: The student takes the integrated understanding from the relational level and lifts it to a higher level of abstraction. They generalize the knowledge, apply it to completely new and unfamiliar situations, formulate hypotheses, or create original frameworks.
- Child Development Example: A student evaluating existing early intervention models for at-risk children and creating an entirely new, culturally adaptable intervention program that addresses previous systemic gaps.
