Program Profile
The Department of Social Work was established under the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in the 2010–2011 academic year, admitting its first group of 10 students. The department produced its first graduates in 2014. In the 2014–2015 academic year, it separated from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and continued its education under the Faculty of Health Sciences. The social work education program consists of a one-year English preparatory program followed by four years of undergraduate study in social work.
As both a discipline and a profession, social work examines the complex interactions between individuals and their environments. The aim of social work is to help every individual fully develop their potential, enrich their life, and prevent dysfunction. The social work profession is focused on problem-solving and change. Accordingly, social workers serve as agents of change in the lives of the individuals, families, and communities they work with, as well as in society at large. Social work represents an interrelated system of values, theory, and practice. The values of social work reflect the national and international ethical principles of the profession.
Social work addresses barriers, inequalities, and injustices that exist within society. It responds to crises and emergencies as well as to everyday personal and social problems. Consistent with its holistic focus on people and their environments, social work employs a variety of skills, techniques, and activities. Social work interventions range from person-centered psychosocial processes to involvement in social policy, planning, and development. These include counseling, clinical social work, group work, social pedagogical work, and family therapy, as well as efforts to help people in communities gain access to services and resources. Interventions may also involve social and political actions aimed at influencing institutional will, community organization, social policy, and economic development.
The holistic focus of social work is universal, but the priorities of social work practice may vary from country to country and over time, depending on cultural, historical, and socio-economic conditions.
The curriculum includes both theoretical and practical courses. Theoretical courses are taught using contemporary methods such as lectures, group discussions, role-playing, and case analyses. In practical courses, students are encouraged to apply theoretical knowledge to practice, helping them develop professional skills and attitudes. In the core methods of the social work profession -casework, group work, community organization, and social work administration- students complete field placements in various social service institutions in Cyprus and abroad, under the supervision of field instructors.
Practical research courses are conducted in small groups under the supervision of an academic advisor, enabling students to gain experience in producing scientific knowledge on social issues and social services.
