Program Description

The Associate Degree in Computer Programming provides students with essential knowledge and practical expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining software systems. Through a curriculum that integrates theoretical concepts with applied problem-solving, students develop proficiency in various programming languages and software development approaches.

Key areas of instruction include areas such as software development, database systems, networking, cybersecurity, system design, and user interface design. The program prioritizes hands-on learning through both individual and collaborative projects, replicating the challenges found in modern software environments.

In addition, the program prepares graduates for roles in software development, application maintenance, and systems analysis. Upon completion, graduates are well-positioned to thrive in fast-paced technology sectors and make meaningful contributions to digital progress.

Recognition Of Prior Learning

At Cyprus International University (CIU), full-time students can be exempted from some courses within the framework of the related bylaws. If the content of the course previously taken in another institution is equivalent to the course offered at CIU, then the student can be exempted from this course with the approval of the related faculty/graduate school after the evaluation of the course content.

Objectives

Program Educational Objectives

The educational objectives (EO) for the associate degree program  in Computer Programming are:

EO1: Apply fundamental programming concepts and software development practices to solve practical computing problems.

EO2: Develop, test, and maintain software applications using modern programming languages and development tools.

EO3: Assist in the design and implementation of software systems in support of business or organizational needs.

EO4: Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

EO5: Demonstrate professional conduct, teamwork, and ethical responsibility in a computing environment.

Program Profile

The Associate Degree in Computer Programming at Cyprus International University is a two-year program that provides students with a strong foundation in programming and software development. The program is offered by the School of Applied Sciences, and it is designed to prepare students for entry-level roles in the IT industry or for continued academic study in related fields.
The curriculum emphasizes the core principles of software development, web technologies, database management, user interface design and software design. Students learn to analyze problems, design solutions, and develop robust applications using modern programming languages and industry-standard tools.
Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on experience, students gain practical skills necessary to build and maintain software systems in a professional setting. The program also promotes essential soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, which are critical for success in today’s collaborative development environments.
Students benefit from access to well-equipped computer labs, digital learning platforms, and specialized development tools, fostering an environment that supports both individual learning and group collaboration. Instruction is delivered through lectures, lab sessions, projects, and assignments designed to simulate industry practices.
A key component of the program is its emphasis on employability and career readiness. Students are encouraged to engage in internships and project work that bridges the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations. The program also emphasizes ethical computing practices, including data integrity, intellectual property, and responsible software use.
Graduates of the Associate Degree in Computer Programming will be equipped with the technical and professional skills required for roles such as junior software developer, web programmer, database assistant, or technical support specialist. They will also have a solid foundation to pursue further education in computer science, information technologies, or software engineering.

Admission and Graduation

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the program, students must:
• Successfully complete and pass all courses outlined in the curriculum without having the grades: F, D- and U
• Complete a mandatory summer internship (typically 30 working days) in a relevant IT company or organization.
• Submit and present a final-year project that demonstrates the ability to apply computer programming knowledge to solve a real-world problem
• Maintain a Minimum GPA Achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, which is the standard academic threshold for graduation

Employments and Occupational Profiles

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Associate Degree in Computer Programming are well-prepared to enter the digital workforce with a strong foundation in programming, software development, and problem-solving. This two-year program equips students with the practical skills and technical knowledge required for a wide range of entry-level roles in the technology sector. Many of its graduates begin their careers as junior software developers, writing, testing, and maintaining code for desktop, mobile, or web-based applications using languages such as Python, Java, C++, and JavaScript. They may work as part of development teams in software companies, IT departments, or digital agencies.
Other graduate take on roles as web developers, building interactive websites and online tools by combining front-end and back-end technologies. This pathway often involves working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript frameworks, and server-side scripting languages. Database assistants and data entry developers are also common roles for associate-level graduates, focusing on managing and retrieving information from databases, writing queries, and supporting data-driven applications.

Graduates may also find employment as quality assurance (QA) testers, ensuring that software applications are functional, user-friendly, and free of bugs. In this role, they learn to write test scripts, document issues, and contribute to the software development life cycle. Additionally, graduates often continue their studies in bachelor’s degree programs in computer science related field.
