- Program Description
-
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, which has been offering full-time programmes under the Faculty of Health Sciences at the International Cyprus University since the 2012–2013 academic year, is a modern academic unit providing science-based education with the aim of protecting and improving individual and public health and enhancing quality of life. The primary objective of our department is to ensure that, in accordance with qualifications defined within the framework of international standards; to train dietitians who, through a student-centred, multidisciplinary approach grounded in science and technology, will provide education and training, research and consultancy services aimed at safeguarding, improving and developing public health and enhancing quality of life through adequate and balanced nutrition, whilst equipping them with lifelong knowledge, skills and innovative values. The vision of our Department is to become a nationally and internationally recognised department that contributes to the advancement of public health through its scientific research and the graduates it produces—who are committed to ethical values, highly qualified and well-equipped—thanks to the contemporary education it provides.
In the initial phase of the programme, students acquire a strong foundation in the basic sciences, health sciences and administrative sciences, whilst in later semesters they undertake courses focused on professional specialisms such as dietary therapy, community nutrition, nutrition in special circumstances and food and beverage systems management.
In our department, where great importance is placed on practical training alongside theoretical education, students develop their professional knowledge and skills through laboratory practicals, term projects, public health placements and work-based learning carried out as part of industry–university partnerships. Students also gain professional experience by undertaking clinical placements in hospitals for adults and children, as well as institutional placements in organisations providing collective catering services.
Our department aims to train students to become healthcare professionals with a multidisciplinary approach, strong communication skills and a well-developed sense of social responsibility. Students who successfully complete the four-year undergraduate programme are awarded a ‘Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics’ and are entitled to practise their profession under the title of ‘Dietitian’.
- Recognition Of Prior Learning
-
At the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Cyprus International University, the recognition of students’ prior learning is carried out by assessing the suitability of their previous higher education experience and the courses they have successfully completed for the programme. In this context, when recognising courses previously completed by students, consideration is given to the course content, credit/ECTS value, theoretical and practical teaching hours, and the alignment of the course learning outcomes with the relevant courses offered by the department.
Applications regarding the recognition of courses previously taken by a student are assessed by the relevant academic units on the basis of the official transcript and course descriptions submitted by the student; exemption and credit transfer procedures are carried out for courses deemed suitable. Exemption procedures are conducted in accordance with the CIU Exemption and Adjustment Procedures Directive (Appendix 1).
