Purpose:
Energy Systems Engineering is an engineering branch that conducts studies on energy production systems, resources, systems modelling, simulation, optimization, analysis, design, energy storage, and energy efficiency. The legislation, management, and policies inherent in the modern energy sector are important for energy systems engineering. Besides the use and management of available technologies, energy systems engineers should also be able to produce new technologies. Therefore, the Energy Systems Engineering Program aims to train qualified engineers who are able to use energy resources in an efficient way, can plan energy production, usage, and transmission, understand energy-related laws, and are capable of critical thinking while following ethical and social principles in their professional practices.
Objectives:
Objectives of the Energy Systems Engineering Undergraduate Program,
- Able to solve problems by following rapidly changing and developing technologies, analyzing and synthesizing in accordance with current innovations.
- To develop individuals who have high communication skills and can carry out collaborative work.
- Individıals whom adopt ethical behavior and lifelong learning and research as a principle.
- To train engineers who have gained environmental awareness and adopted the understanding of sustainable development.
- Recognition Of Prior Learning

Program Profile
Formal education has been implemented in Cyprus International University (CIU) Energy Systems Engineering program since 2008. The language of instruction is English and a 4-year curriculum consisting of 137 credits. Within the framework of the program, students are given the title of Energy Systems Engineer. In the diplomas, it is stated that s/he has successfully completed a 4-year undergraduate education.
After completing the one-year basic science courses in the program, students take theoretical and practical courses related to solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, hydroelectric power plants and thermal power plant. The syllabus of the Energy Systems Engineering program also covers mathematics, computer programming and non-departmental social-oriented courses. Students in the program are encouraged to carry out applied and theoretical research in addition to their practical training.
In the Energy Systems Engineering program, the teaching method is planned with a student-centered, learning-by-doing approach. In particular, the participatory, sharing and creative activities of the students are given importance, and the instructors play a highly encouraging and guiding role. Practical lessons of students take place in laboratories. Theoretical courses are given with the education given in the classrooms. Computer laboratories and Energy Systems Engineering laboratories are actively used by students. In this context, the number of books and library facilities in the field of education of Energy Systems Engineering program have been also improved over the years and the number of books has been increased significantly.

Employments and Occupational Profiles
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Energy systems engineers can develop careers in a broad range of workplaces in the public and private sectors. The increasing amount of energy investments, especially over the last decade, has resulted in an increase in demand for engineers in the energy sector. Graduates of the Energy Systems Engineering Program can work in areas related with energy efficiency, energy conservation, and energy laws. Today, in response to the demand for clean energy, investments are increasing in renewable energy, such as solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, and hydroelectric power plants. In addition to these, there are planned developments in thermal power plants and nuclear power plants. These developments also create a significant source of employment.
Assessment and Learning
Exams, Assessment and Grading
The assessment and evaluation methods applied in each course are defined in the Course Teaching Plan included in the Program Information Package and prepared by the relevant course instructor(s). Examinations and the calculation of course grades are conducted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Cyprus International University Associate and Undergraduate Education, Teaching, and Examination Regulations.
Learning Taxonomy
The course learning outcomes have been developed based on the SOLO (Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome) Taxonomy. Information regarding the ECTS credit calculation methodology and related guidelines can be accessed through the ECTS Commission webpage of Cyprus International University (https://ciu.edu.tr/tr/akademik/akts).
