Program Description

The Graduate Program in Nutrition and Dietetics began to offer education at the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research of Cyprus International University in 2016. The purposes of the program are: to expand the vision of the personnel trained in nutrition, nutrition and / or dietetics in line with universal values and country facts and requirements, and in case of impaired health; to adopt the lifelong learning principles with the application knowledge of medical nutrition therapy that the individual needs; to become qualified personnel who have reached professional competence to have acquired national and international recognition, practice and research. The main objective of the program is; to provide education, research, management and scientific research in the field of innovation for professionals who will respond to the constantly changing and developing nutritional requirements of the society by continuing nutrition and dietetics education at the universal standards.

Recognition Of Prior Learning

At the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics,  Cyprus International University, the recognition of students’ prior learning is carried out by assessing the suitability of their previous higher education experience and the courses they have successfully completed for the programme. In this context, when recognising courses previously completed by students, consideration is given to the course content, credit/ECTS value, theoretical and practical teaching hours, and the alignment of the course learning outcomes with the relevant courses offered by the department.

 Applications for the recognition of courses previously taken by a student are assessed by the relevant academic units on the basis of the official transcript and course syllabuses submitted by the student; exemption and credit transfer procedures are carried out for courses deemed suitable. Exemption procedures are carried out in accordance with the CIU Guidelines on Exemption and Credit Transfer (Appendix 1) and the CIU Postgraduate Education and Teaching Regulation (Appendix 2) s.

Program Educational Objectives

PEA1.

To train specialist dietitians who possess up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge and skills at an expert level in the field of nutrition and dietetics, and who are able to incorporate scientific and technological developments into their professional practice.

PEA2.

To train specialists who can plan and conduct scientific research in the field of nutrition and dietetics; analyse, interpret and report scientifically on data obtained using appropriate research and statistical methods.

PEA3.

To train graduates who can evaluate current scientific knowledge in the field of nutrition and dietetics using a critical and evidence-based approach, and who continuously develop their professional knowledge and competencies through a commitment to lifelong learning.

PEA4.

To train specialists who can play an active role in individual and interdisciplinary teamwork within the field of nutrition and dietetics; who can share scientific knowledge and research findings orally and in writing at national and international levels; and who can make effective use of communication and information technologies.

PEA5.

To train specialists who embrace ethical principles in scientific and professional practice; who prioritise individual and public health; and who can contribute to scientific research in the field of nutrition and dietetics aimed at quality improvement, health policies and societal needs.

Program Profile

The Master’s Programme in Nutrition and Dietetics aims to equip students with up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge in the field of nutrition and dietetics; to enable them to conduct scientific research processes independently and using an interdisciplinary approach; and to enable them to analyse and interpret the data obtained using appropriate statistical methods. The programme aims to develop students’ abilities to generate scientific knowledge, report research findings and share them within national and international scientific communities.

The programme contributes to the development of students into specialists who can use information and communication technologies effectively, think critically and analytically, adhere to ethical principles, are adept at teamwork and have embraced a culture of lifelong learning. Furthermore, graduates are encouraged to develop evidence-based solutions that safeguard individual and public health, and to make scientific contributions to the formulation, implementation and evaluation of national and international nutrition policies.

Admission and Graduation

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from the Non-Thesis Master’s Programme in Nutrition and Dietetics, students must successfully complete at least 10 modules within the programme, totalling 30 credits, and successfully complete the BESD530 Graduation Project module included in the curriculum.

Students must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00/4.00 at the time of graduation and fulfil the other conditions specified in the University’s relevant regulations and academic provisions concerning postgraduate education and teaching.

As part of the Graduation Project, students are expected to conduct research into the scientific literature on a current topic related to the field of Nutrition and Dietetics, evaluate current scientific knowledge, discuss the information obtained from a critical perspective, prepare a scientific report and present their work.

Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements of the programme and fulfil the relevant graduation requirements are entitled to receive the Master’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics (non-thesis).

Specific Admission Requirements

Admissions to Master’s, PhD and professional doctorate programmes for students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies are offered each year for the Fall and Spring semesters. Applicants may apply directly to UKÜ via the application system.

Employments and Occupational Profiles

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Master’s Programme in Nutrition and Dietetics (non-thesis) have the opportunity to work in various fields within the public and private sectors by combining the professional knowledge and skills they acquired at undergraduate level with the up-to-date and advanced knowledge, research and practical skills they have developed at postgraduate level.

Graduates may take up positions in institutions providing health and education services, such as public and private hospitals and other inpatient care facilities, outpatient diagnosis and treatment centres, rehabilitation centres, dialysis centres, organisations providing home care services, care and rehabilitation centres for the elderly, children and people with disabilities, sports centres, nutrition and diet counselling centres, universities and other educational institutions, provincial health directorates and organisations active in the field of health education.

In addition, graduates may take on roles in health education and consultancy, public health and community health projects, non-governmental organisations active in the health sector, research and scientific studies, as well as projects and consultancy activities in the fields of nutrition and dietetics.

Postgraduate education contributes to graduates’ development of professional expertise, strengthening their skills in scientific research and evidence-based practice, and supporting their continued academic development. Graduates aiming for an academic career may continue their studies at doctoral level, provided they meet the relevant requirements, thereby pursuing their academic work.

Exams, Assessment and Grading

The marking system is implemented as outlined above. The assessment methods applied for each course are defined in the ‘Course Teaching Plan’ prepared by the relevant academic staff member(s) and included in the Information Pack. With regard to examinations and course grades, the relevant articles of the International Cyprus University Postgraduate Education and Teaching Regulations apply. The relevant regulations have been uploaded as ‘ANNEX – POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION AND TEACHING REGULATIONS’.
