Course Description
The course focuses on the function of play in psychological, social and cultural development of human beings. Emphasis will be placed on the possibility of how play can be incorporated in social work interventions with children, families, and individual adults. A brief history of play will be followed by the introduction to main principles of play therapy, methods of expressive play, strategies for the use of play as a means of effective communication, teaching essential personal and social skills through play, and play as a method to cope with personal and interpersonal stress and problems. Students will be taught how to apply play therapy to address issues such as trauma, loss, mood disturbance, relational stress, anxiety, and academic performance.
