Course Description

This course examines the birth of the press in Turkey, the first legal regulation of the press and their impact on the socio-cultural and political spheres of the country with a sense of historical continuity. The course content covers the press before and after the Tanzimat reforms in the Ottoman Empire, the first newspapers (Ottoman, non-Ottoman, foreign and minority newspapers), the I. and II. Constitutional eras, the War of Independence and the press in the first years of the Republic, the press under the one-party and the pluralistic party systems, and the role press in the 1960s, and in 1971 and in the 1980 military coups. Turkish media in the 1990s era of monopolization will also be addressed.
