Course Description

The course investigates the relationship between culture and tourism, by examining the Socio-cultural complexities of cultural heritage tourism. Issues and trends in the management of tangible and intangible assets, such as interpretation, globalization, cross-cultural values, impacts of development, sustainable tourism, etc. are also investigated. Students will be able to: Acquire knowledge and demonstrate an understanding of: a. the relationship between culture and tourism b. concepts and theories of cultural tourism c. how cultural tourism affects and is affected by stakeholders d. the relationship between cultural tourism and debates about contemporary issues , and learn to perform under constraints and demonstrate an ability to work in a group through collaboration and cooperation.

Learning Outcomes

  1. L01 Students will be able to define cultural heritage tourism and identify key components such as heritage resources, tourist activities and visitor experiences within this field. SOLO 1
  2. L02 Students will be able to recognize major types of cultural heritage resources (e.g. built heritage, museums, cultural landscapes, religious sites) and name at least one example for each type from the course material. SOLO 2
  3. L03 Students will be able to list multiple heritage tourist motivations and describe how these motivations influence demand patterns in cultural heritage tourism. SOLO 3
  4. L05 Students will be able to describe several environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts of tourism on heritage places and separate positive from negative effects using examples from the course. SOLO 3
