Course Description

Basic reaction types, reaction mechanisms of functional groups, of organic compounds like alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, benzene and aromatic hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, thiols, the carbonyl groups, aldehydes, and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines. Also nomenclature and stereochemistry will be presented. Structure and bonding, alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, reactions of alkenes and alkynes, aromatic compounds, stereochemistry, organohalides, nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations, alcohols, phenols, ethers will be included. Aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, carbonyl alpha substitution and condensation reactions, amines, spectroscopy, biomolecules, carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides and proteins will be covered.
