Course Description
The student who faces with visual communication and graphic design should learn how to look and see first. The aim of this course is to teach the freehand drawing for a conceptual purpose. More than doodling, the sketching is an expression method. Student should learn how to sketch for achieving visualize the ideas. It is mandatory to keep a sketchbook during the course term. Visual note keeping, observation, sketching as a predesign process, to keep a sketchbook as an artistic expression method are among the subjects. Student can build image-meaning integrity as an active participant by this course. The habit of sketchbook use, brings method and working discipline. Student gains a rewarding predesign habit at the end of the course.

Course Syllabus
| Week | Topic |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Introduction, rules, fundamental tools for course and information |
| Week 2 | The Designer’s Eye & Line Quality Breaking the "preconceived image" vs. reality. Exercises: Blind contour, weighted lines, and ghosting techniques. |
| Week 3 | Perspective & Volumetric Thinking Drawing 3D forms (cubes, cylinders, spheres) in 1 and 2-point perspective. |
| Week 4 | Light, Shadow, and Texture Understanding light sources to define form. Introduction to hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling for material representation. |
| Week 5 | Deconstructing the Object Analyzing complex objects and breaking them down into primitive shapes. Introduction to Orthographic Projection (top, side, and front views). |
| Week 6 | "X-ray" drawing: sketching the internal structure of objects. Focus on proportion and scale. |
| Week 7 | MIDTERM EXAMS |
| Week 8 | MIDTERM EXAMS |
| Week 9 | Quick gesture drawings for scale and context. The "Mannequin" method for placing humans within design environments. |
| Week 10 | Letterform Anatomy & Hand Lettering Sketching serifs, terminals, and x-heights. Understanding the "skeleton" of a typeface before adding weight. |
| Week 11 | Logotype Ideation & Iteration The "Thumbnail" method: Generating 50+ ideas rapidly. Refining a concept through tracing paper overlays. |
| Week 12 | Layout & Grid Sketching Sketching wireframes for web and print. Using "greeking" (placeholder text) and blocking to establish hierarchy. |
| Week 13 | Iconography & SymbolismSimplifying complex ideas into universal symbols.Abstraction exercises: Realistic $\rightarrow$ Iconic $\rightarrow$ Abstract. |
| Week 14 | Visual Metaphors & Conceptual Thinking Mind-mapping through sketching. Solving design "problems" through visual puns and analogies. |
| Week 15 | FINAL EXAMS |
