Course Description
The course provides a chronological survey of the works of art of the Near Eastern, Mediterranean and Western civilisations from Prehistory to the Renaissance , including the cultures of the Bronze Age, the Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras, and the western medieval periods, early Medieval, Romanesque and Gothic . Individual art historical styles, types of works of art, subject matters, iconography, semiotics and techniques are analysed, considering the respective cultural, historical, political and social context. The changing notions of the question “what is art, and what is an artist?” serve as background throughout the course.
