Course Description

An introductory course in the fundamentals of digital technology, including their roles in the creation, reproduction, and distribution of visual messages. Study of the major drawing and imaging software used in the graphic design industry. Students will become familiar with digital tools and terminology as they apply to creative visual communication. Through project critiques, discussion and demonstrations students will create projects that examine technology as an art medium and a design strategy. The goal of this course is to explore fundamental techniques mostly in Adobe Photoshop. Ideal for students eager to explore Adobe Photoshop, work with layer techniques, gain an understanding of how to do basic photo repairs and color enhancements.

Course outcomes

  1. 01 1- Describe (3) basic selection tools and edge refinement to isolate and edit parts of an image.
  2. 02 2- Create (4) images for Web and print output with appropriate sizing and resolution.
  3. 03 3-Recognize (2) layers through ordering, positioning, scaling, rotation, and adjustments.
  4. 04 4- Illustrate (3) images by combining filters with blending and masks.
  5. 05 5- Apply (3) Retouch Methods and alter photographs non-destructively, using faux dodging and burning, Content-Aware tools, and adjustment layers.
  6. 06 6. Recognize (2) Smart Objects in Photoshop to non-destructively edit, link, update images.

Week 2 General introduction to computer graphics, raster graphics, vector graphics and image formats Introduction to Photoshop Workspace an Image Size and Resolution tools. Exporting formats. Resizing and Transform features.
Week 3 Working with layers cutting and advanced selection tools. Creating collages.
Week 4 Masking and blending techniques. Creating collages through masking. Creating conceptual collages through masking, transparency and blending.
Week 5 Working with Smart Objects and vector objects.
Week 6 Image adjustment tools for editing raster images. Fixing Photographs
Week 7 Working with Type tools. Cover design with type.
Week 8 MIDTERM EXAM WEEK
Week 9 Working with Camera Raw section for editing Photographs. Colour adjustments and colour correction standards.
Week 10 The World of Digital Art Looking at basics of Computer Art Working with brush and pattern tools for digital painting.
Week 11 Layer blending mode and filters / Photo manipulation by using mask and layer blending
Week 12 Manipulating photographs Working with Filters for editing raster images. Creating conceptual collages.
Week 13 Creating animation and gif with Photoshop motion.
Week 14 Practice session, assignment review and problem solving. Finalizing works
