Week 1 Introduction to the course
Week 2 Origins of Visual Communication Prehistoric cave paintings, Cuneiform, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, development of the alphabet, early papyrus scrolls.
Week 3 Medieval Manuscripts & Early Print Scriptoriums, Illuminated Manuscripts, block printing, woodcuts, Gutenberg’s movable-type printing press, Incunabula era.
Week 4 Renaissance Graphic Design Venetian typography (Aldus Manutius, Nicolas Jenson), Humanist page design, French Renaissance (Claude Garamond), book design standards.
Week 5 18th Century & Industrial Revolution Transitional and Modern types (Caslon, Baskerville, Bodoni, Didot), steam-powered presses, lithography, rise of commercial advertising
Week 6 Victorian Era & Art Nouveau Chromolithography, poster art (Jules Chéret, Alphonse Mucha), organic curves ("whiplash" line), integration of fine art and commercial crafts.

Week 9 The Arts & Crafts Movement William Morris, Kelmscott Press, reaction against industrial mass production, revival of hand craftsmanship, private press movement.
Week 10 Avant-Garde & Early Modernism Futurism (Marinetti), Dadaism (photomontage, radical layout), Constructivism (El Lissitzky, Rodchenko), De Stijl (Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg).
Week 11 The Bauhaus & The New Typography Walter Gropius, Herbert Bayer, Jan Tschichold’s Die Neue Typographie, asymmetric layout, grid structures, functional minimalism.
Week 12 Mid-Century American Modernism The West Coast vs. New York School, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Cipe Pineles, editorial design, birth of modern corporate branding.
Week 13 International Typographic Style Swiss Style principles, grid systems, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann, development and impact of Helvetica and Univers.
Week 14 Postmodernism & New Wave Wolfgang Weingart, April Greiman, punk visual culture (Jamie Reid), David Carson, deconstructionism, breaking grid rules. + The Digital Revolution Introduction of the Apple Macintosh, bitmapped typography, PostScript, early web design constraints, desktop publishing democratization.
