Course Description

The course explores a variety of communication skill areas specifically relevant to English language teachers in the language classroom. Students will gain a practical and functional awareness of these skill areas. Non-verbal communication and features of paralinguistics are explored. Practical techniques to communicate in the classroom are introduced, such as eliciting, nominating, and monitoring. Active listening and the use of back-channeling devices are also an area that is included in the course. The combination of the non-verbal skills and knowledge gained with the practical techniques related to dealing with students in a language learning environment as mentioned above provide students of this course with a foundation of effective communication on which to develop.
