Course Description

In this introductory course on anthropology, the aim is to explore human cultural diversity and the factors that cause this diversity. Besides, the different forms that universal social structures take in different societies is described. In this course, topics such as the history of anthropology, the basic theories, the difference between physical and social anthropology are introduced. The content of the course includes the biological and cultural evolution of the humankind, societal change, kinship and family, religions and languages, the form of political power, race and ethnicity, how gender differences are practiced in different cultures, globalization and the historical transformations in the productive processes of humans. The students are expected to gain the ability to view different cultures, including their own, through a comparative perspective.
