Course Description

Advertising Design focuses on the role of design in an advertising context. It concentrates on advertising strategy based on media and marketing realities. Students will explore specific areas of advertising, including consumer goods, consumer service and public service. Within the scope of the course, the problems of designing graphic material to sell products, services and ideas, the principles of advertising design and their applications, the preparation of roughs and comps and their presentations, a combination of effective, use of illustration, typography and photography for both communication and marketing purposes will be considered. Students are expected to select and focus on specific design in advertising industry.

Course outcomes

  1. 01 Knows the anatomy of a letter and classification of typography.(Solo: 2)
  2. 02 You can create a new font character and render it in graphics programs.(Solo: 3)
  3. 03 Determining letters and typefaces, tracking, alignment, symbolizing and using these concepts in typographic designs.(Solo: 3)
  4. 04 To characterize the history of typography, the different press and printing techniques used throughout history.(Solo: 4)
  5. 05 Applying paragraphs, single-column, multi-column and modular grids in book and magazine designs.(Solo: 4)
  6. 06 To be able to compare a successful or unsuccessful typographic design.(Solo: 4)

Week 1 Introduction to Production Techniques in Advertising
Week 2 Informative vs. Emotional Advertising; Design one informative and one emotional poster.
Week 3 Color & Resolution Fundamentals; Color correction, resizing, and exporting exercises.
Week 4 Typography in Advertising; Social Message Through Typography (Static Ad)
Week 5 Composition & Visual Balance; Redesign an existing ad focusing on layout and hierarchy.
Week 6 Visual Identity & Branding Consistency; Create a mini-series of 3 ad variations for one brand.
Week 7 Social Media Advertising and Storytelling/Developing 4-part social media campaigns (post series design)

Week 10 Storytelling and Concept Development; Develop a concept sketch for a mini campaign.
