Course Description
The main objective of this course is to uncover the philosophical issues that pertain to social work theories and practice. For this, the course starts with the question “Is social work solely an applied science?”. To answer this question, we will examine the classification of sciences. The course will continue with the analysis of the philosophical assumptions of major social work approaches like social learning, systems theory, etc and how these are connected to major philosophical currents. Then, basic concepts such as empathy, the other, dignity, welfare, charity, rights, justice, free will and determinism will be analysed. Lastly, metaethical issues concerning social work interventions will be examined. The course will be interactive such that it includes student presentations and in class discussions of selected papers.
