Course Description

Within the scope of this course, students will be covered with information on what information is needed in social service intervention related to addiction and substance use, skills required for assessment and intervention, and information necessary to work with individuals who have problems with the use of psychoactive substances and other mood-changing behaviors. This course provides students and front-line workers with an opportunity to explore perspectives and practices currently implemented in the addictions field. Application of knowledge about core practice skills including identification and screening, assessment, intervention models and approaches, and case management in a system of care will be delivered through a variety of learning activities.

Course Syllabus

Week 1 Drug classification system and the controlled substance schedules.
Week 2 Describe and discuss the psychological, sociological, and physiological effects of mood altering substances and behaviors.
Week 3 Explain services and treatment alternatives for psychological, sociological, and physical effects of mood altering substance behaviors.
Week 4 State various models which explain the etiology of addiction

Week 7 Define ethical standards governing the field of the addiction counseling including professionalism and confidentiality.
Week 8 Explain the aspects of addiction on the family
Week 9 Identify diversity issues related to addiction services.
Week 10 Describe the continuum of care as related to alcohol and other drug abuse to include issues relevant to relapse prevention.
