Course Description
The course traces the historical emergence of the modern state to the Treaty of Westphalia and follows its development through the age of modernity to that of globalism. The purpose of this historical survey is to reveal the inherent relations between law, community, and power. The course studies the types and forms of these relations to determine the concept of sovereignty most closely associated with statehood. Seminal works of Hobbes, Schmitt, and Agamben are read to understand the role of ‘state of emergency’ in exercising sovereign power over masses. The course concludes with post-modern approaches to power and the challenges these approaches pose for the definition and the authority of the modern state.
