Course Description

Urbanization is a global phenomenon: new realities like the rise of an informal labor market, global capital and labor flows, the flight of businesses and the middle class to the suburbs. This course will examine historical development of cities in the world and common social problems that come with the urbanization. The course will bring special attention to worker migration and current problems of discrimination, inequality, illegal work, cultural clashes between natives and the immigrants. Students will learn to access, analyze, and map information; to frame and interpret these data within a regional perspective; and to construct profiles of cities and neighborhoods. The course will also analyze micro and macro social work interventions to urban problems.
