Course Description
The course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills about newborn characteristics, protection of newborn health, and newborn care during the first 28 days of life. The physiological adaptation processes of the newborn’s respiratory, circulatory, and thermoregulation systems during the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life are discussed. The course covers initial procedures performed in the delivery room, Apgar score assessment, skin-to-skin contact, hygienic care, breastfeeding and nutrition management, the importance of breast milk, proper breastfeeding techniques, and breast milk expression and storage conditions. Additionally, common neonatal diseases, risk factors, early diagnosis, nursing care approaches, and family education are addressed. Safe newborn care practices and holistic nursing approaches are also emphasized.
