Course Description

This course introduces undergraduate nursing students to the healthcare needs, challenges, and inequalities experienced by disadvantaged and vulnerable populations across the lifespan. The course examines the social, economic, cultural, environmental, and political factors that contribute to health disparities and unequal access to healthcare services. Students will explore the concepts of health equity, social determinants of health, cultural competence, human rights, and social justice as they relate to nursing practice. The course focuses on the health needs and nursing care of diverse vulnerable populations, including older adults, children at risk, women experiencing social disadvantage, people living with disabilities, individuals with mental health conditions, migrants and refugees, people experiencing homelessness, individuals living in poverty, victims of violence and abuse, people with substance use disorders, incarcerated populations, and other marginalized groups. Emphasis is placed on identifying barriers to healthcare access, reducing health inequities, advocating for vulnerable individuals and communities, and delivering culturally sensitive, ethical, person-centered, and evidence-informed nursing care.
