Course Description

This course will provide students with an overview of evolutionary and ecological models. The effects of developments in molecular evolution, the diversity of life in an evolutionary framework, and the foundations of ecology will be emphasized, as well as the principles of evolution, ecosystem concepts, and human-induced problems. It will describe the main patterns of evolutionary change, including selection and drift, describing and interpreting phylogenies, understanding how reproductive isolation arises and how new species emerge, describing evolution at the genetic and genomic levels, understanding the history of life forms on earth, individuals and population genetics, explaining how species interact (competition, mutualism, predation, etc.), understanding how communities stay together and biodiversity, describing ecosystem processes (nutrient cycling, decomposition).
