Course Description
This course covers current concepts and information about cancer. Students are informed about the genetic and molecular changes that occur during the transformation of normal cells into malignant cancer cells, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development and informs about current treatment approaches. Students acquire knowledge about tumor formation and techniques commonly used in cancer biology, develop their critical thinking skills and gain the ability to explain the cellular and molecular basis of disease. Students will gain the ability to explain possible types of gene mutations and how these mutations may contribute to cancer formation, describe the function of an oncogene and tumor suppressor genes, learn how cancer cells survive cell death, and explain current approaches in cancer treatment.
