Course Description

This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for analysing film as an art and an aesthetic category. The course focuses on film theories and film criticism and gives special attention to detailed film analyses. Within this context it examines and analyses the film styles of “auteur” filmmakers and compares their cinematographic styles with those of mainstream filmmakers. It also considers these films’ contributions to film art and their special status in the history of film. Topics such as film art and filmmaking, film form, film style, cinematography, editing in cinema, lighting and sound, style as a formal system, types of films, technology and the professional field are examined comparatively with examples from different countries cinemas’ and from different film traditions in the world.
