Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the creative and technical aspects of short film production. It introduces the notion of short film as a cinematic genre from both artistic and historical perspectives. Course content includes the aims, history, production-directing stages, and techniques of short films and the process of converting an idea to visual expression. The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about the production and directing stages of the short film, and enables students to produce their own short film. Significant examples of short films will be analyzed and students will be encouraged to write, produce, direct, edit and present their own short films.

Week 1 Introduction: Overview of course schedule and structure
Week 2 Concept in film, Screening of successful short films around the world
Week 3 Grammar in film, elements of film used to create a specific meaning, using cinematography and mise- en –scene in film
Week 4 Stages of Film Production (pre- production, production and post- production stages of a film, film crew)
Week 5 Preproduction: theme, scenario, shooting scenario and story board, practice in studio: setting, lighting and camera
Week 6 Presentations of Short Film Project Ideas and crews, Deciding the lighting, aspects of camera, camera movements, settings, actors, costume, hair and make-up, acting, dialogues, practice in studio: setting, lighting and camera
Week 7 Deciding the lighting, aspects of camera, camera movements, settings, actors, costume, hair and make-up, acting, dialogues, practice in studio: setting, lighting and camera

Week 9 Fundamentals of using sound and music in film, practice in studio with audio production equipments
