Course Syllabus

Week Topic
Week 1 Introduce the second law of thermodynamics.
Week 2 Apply the second law of thermodynamics to cycles and cyclic devices.
Week 3 Describe the Carnot cycle.
Week 4 Define a new property called entropy to quantify the second-law effects.
Week 5 Calculate the entropy changes that take place during processes for pure substances, incompressible substances, and ideal gases.
Week 6 Examine a special class of idealized processes, called isentropic processes.
Week 7 Develop the property relations for these processes.
Week 8 Mid-Term Exams
Week 9 Mid-Term Exams
Week 10 Evaluate the performance of gas power cycles for which the working fluid remains a gas throughout the entire cycle.
Week 11 Develop simplifying assumptions applicable to gas power cycles.
Week 12 Review the operation of reciprocating engines.
Week 13 Analyse both closed and open gas power cycles.
Week 14 Solve problems based on the Otto and Diesel cycles.
Week 15 Solve problems based on the Brayton cycle.
