Course Description

Lawyering skills course focuses upon practical aspects of lawyering introducing students to skills and knowledge necessary for the practice of law. The course begins with a study of basic principles of legal writing and research teaching students techniques of drafting legal letters, memoranda, briefs, attendance notes, and legal opinion pieces. This part of the course, also, provides an overview of adopting a lawyer's approach to legal research. The second part of the course centres upon advocacy skills. Beginning with basic conventions of advocacy, the course focuses upon speeches and witness handling. The focus, then, shifts onto interviewing and conferencing skills for lawyers. The course concludes with imparting practical knowledge on legal negotiation and the practice of mediation.
