Course Description

This course aims to examine the political structure and development of Cyprus from both historical and contemporary perspectives. It explores the political institutions, political parties, leadership, and intercommunal relations of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities. In addition to the historical development of the Cyprus problem and negotiation processes toward its resolution, the course examines the roles of key actors such as Türkiye, Greece, the United Nations, and the European Union in shaping the politics of the island. It also addresses the influence of identity, nationalism, security, mutual perceptions, and confidence-building measures on Cypriot politics. The course aims to enable students to analyze political developments in Cyprus through the interaction of local, regional, and international dynamics and to critically assess different perspectives on the future of the island.
