Course Description

In this course, students will think about the concepts of high culture and low culture based on critical theory. The aim of the course is to gain students' awareness in the area of communication design. Visual culture items such as cinema, commercial films, cartoons, music clips are theoretically debated and criticized with the awareness of popular culture concepts. The theories of Adorno, Benjamin and Debord are examined. Students are expected to earn the ability to look more openly and more critically and consciously into the universe of visual culture in their surroundings. It is the most important achievements of this course to establish the relation between popular culture and communication design and to design the right meaning-image relations.
