Course Description

The course outlines the hand lettering as a beginning. Students examine their own handwriting and develop it as a design element. The course represents the typography on a basic context. With a description of typography and its relation to graphic design, this course has a beginner level. Historical development of typography: the emergence of the alphabet; the Latin alphabet; the development of printing and printed material. It is possible to overlap with the basic design attainments by the learning basic terminology on typography including typefaces, fonts, leading, kerning and alignment. Furthermore the theoretical and historical lectures, the course represents a creative and experimental studio work. This course is about exploring the relationship between the basic forms of letters and words, applying forms into typographic designs.

Course outcomes

  1. 01 Ability to understand the anatomy of a letter, know letter classifications. (Solo: 3)

  3. 03 Understanding of letter spacing, kerning, tracking, leading, alignments, hierarchy and be able to use these concepts in typographic designs. (Solo: 3)
  4. 04 Comprehension of the history of typography, different press and printing techniques used throughout history. (Solo: 4)
  5. 05 Ability to use paragraphs, single-column, multi-column and modular grids in book and magazine designs. (Solo: 2)
  6. 06 Able to distinguish a good or unsuccessful typographic design. (Solo: 4)
  7. 07 Ability to use letters, text and paragraphs as a design component with all other media elements. (Solo: 2)
