Course Description

This course introduces issues regarding the etiology, treatment, and prevention of addictive behaviors. A multidimensional approach that includes biological, psychological, and social factors is emphasized. Topics covered include dependence on alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, as well as pathological gambling, eating disorders and compulsive sexual behavior. Students will establish a working understanding on the principles and dynamics underlying the development of addictions and how addictions influence behavior and social relations. Cutting edge research pertaining to treatment modalities will be analyzed and evaluated while examining factors leading to success and failures in addictions treatment will also be covered. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify various addictions, explain how they were established, and link proper treatment modalities with associated addictions.
