Course Description

This course aims to introduce the various aspects of telling stories via photography. Building on previous photography courses, it emphasizes the differences between photography and photojournalism. The course focuses on the development, features, pioneers and genres of photojournalism, and analyses how photojournalism has become an institutionalized part of journalism in general. The course content addresses the technological and aesthetic dimensions of photojournalism, the careers of important photojournalists, the impact of news photography, and the ethics of digitally manipulating news photographs. Special attention given to the rules and methods of cutline writing, which is complementary for both the photograph and story.

Week 1 Introduction to the course and definition of Photojournalism
Week 2 Basics of Photojournalism: Distinguishing elements of Photojournalism from close branches of Photography
Week 3 Three types of shots dominating Photojournalism: establishing, mid-range, and close-up shots.
Week 4 Three stages in photo editing process: selection, cropping, scaling. Photographic elements in selection process.
Week 5 What makes a photograph newsworthy? News photos and feature photos.
Week 6 Cutlines: General guidelines for writing cutlines. Examples and exercises.
Week 7 Cropping: Rules and three ways of cropping same photograph.
Week 8 MID-TERM EXAM WEEK
Week 9 Types of Photojournalism: Sports, war, glamour, spot news, travel, and wildlife photojournalism.
Week 10 Composition in photography: camera angle and the rule of thirds
Week 11 Six elements in Photo-journalistic guidelines. Good photos vs. bad photos
Week 12 Photo essay; Five photo essay tips, narrative and thematic photo essays.
Week 13 Types of photos in photo essays: the lead, the scene, the portraits, the deatil photos, the close-up photos, the signature photo, and the clincher photo
Week 14 The significance of Photojournalism, Photojournalism from past to present: candid photography, photojournalism magazine Life, Robert Capa and W. Eugene Smith.
