Course Description
In this course, it is aimed to introduce "scientific illustration", which is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of art and science. In this course, students learn the basic principles of creating effective illustrations to communicate scientific observations and data. It will mainly focus on creating the best images for use in research, teaching, journal publications, presentations, and other applications. Basic topics of this course include areas of scientific illustration, methods used, scientific lighting, composition, measurement methods, nature logging, accurate visual note-taking, simple drawing techniques, and observation skills development. Students present the observation book at the end of the semester, which includes the observation, measurement, and drawing skills they have gained during the semester, as well as their sketches.
