Course Description

The contents of this course are principles of oral surgery, biopsy indications,biopsy techniques, treatments of sinus perforations, postoperative managements, incisions and flap designs. Students will be able to relay information about basic concepts and principles of oral surgery, describe biopsy indications, biopsy techniques, treatments of sinus perforations and postoperative managements, learn incisions, flap designs, apical resection, and assesment of impacted tooth, descibe postoperative maintenance and complications, understand consultation and its importance, comprehend diseases and tumors of salivary glands, explain treatments of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts, learn bone and soft tissue grafting techniques, know indications, and recognize all kinds of graft materials.

Week 1 Identification of epithelial and non-epithelial cysts, characteristics of odontogenic keratocyst and gingival cyst, differential diagnosis and surgical treatments, case discussion
Week 2 Characteristics, differential diagnosis and surgical treatment of non-epithelial and soft tissue cysts, case discussion
Week 3 Definition and classification of jaw osteomyelitis, etiology, lower and upper jaw, differences in acute chronic suppurative osteomyelitis, treatment approaches and complications, Chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis, Garre and chronic specific osteomyelitis features and treatment approach
Week 4 Definition of apical resection (apicoectomy), indication, surgical technique and patient follow-up
Week 5 Role of physical therapy methods in oral and maxillofacial surgery
Week 6 Definition and technique of transplantation and reimplantation terms
Week 7 Anterior tooth traumas and treatments in developmental age
Week 8 midterm exam
Week 9 Pathological examination methods, biopsy methods and application techniques
Week 10 IV and IM injection techniques
Week 11 Areas of use, technique and complications of cryosurgery and laser surgery
Week 12 Functional anatomy of the maxillary sinus and diagnostic method in sinus diseases
Week 13 Odontogenic infection, local and systemic findings
Week 14 General principles, surgery and supportive treatment in the treatment of odontogenic infections.
