Course Description
This course will provide a comparative history of media communication in Britain and America. It is organized as a series of case studies addressing key events over the last two centuries – including imperialism and decolonization, WWII, the Civil Rights movement and the Cold War – and their representation in the media. In this way, the course will not only examine the histories of individual media forms, but also the history of media representation in an Anglo-American cultural context. Key questions will include: what are the connections between media representation and political power? How and why have American and British media perspectives diverged? And how has the role played by media in these countries developed over time?
