Course Description

The course aims to enable students to assimilate the theory of Environmental Management Systems, and learn the skills of introducing such a system in Construction environments. The students should be made aware of how environmental management systems are used internationally in construction, and be able to critically discuss the benefits and drawbacks of these systems, and how they can be further developed. To achieve following subjects will be discussed in detail. The environmental effects of construction. Environmental awareness. Environmental consideration. The need for environmental management system (EMS). Environmental standard (ISO 14001). Systems approach. Organizational elements of EMS. Environmental impact assessment (EIA). Outline elements of EIA. Environmental considerations in developing a project’s design. Contractor’s EMS and project environmental management program. Contractor’s environmental management plan.
