Course Description
This course will focus on fundamentals of pavement management. It will integrate network definition, pavement evaluation, modeling, and economic analysis. A framework for a pavement management system including data collection, pavement monitoring, pavement condition index development, pavement performance model development, life cycle cost analysis, and priority programming will be discussed in detail. Other topics covered in this course will include: database management, new data collection methods, Markov chain method, Bayesian method, and optimization techniques. This course will combine theoretical principles with practical applications. This course assists students to perform various analyses of hypothetical and real life situations since several practical examples have been included. Also, it helps students to lead the class as an instructor, and accomplish a project on their own.
ADVANCED PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Evaluation Tools (Active Term)
No evaluation items have been defined.
Course outcomes
- 01 define the difference between project and network-level pavement management processes and explain the reasons for the division and the interface required between them;
- 02 explain how to determine, what data to collect, and the methods available for collecting it at both project and network-level;
- 03 explain how to define the condition of a pavement, the advantages and disadvantages of different collection methods, and how to decide which condition data and collection methods should be used for a given agency;
- 04 describe different techniques to evaluating structural capacity of pavement systems;
- 05 explain different approaches to analyzing Falling Weight Deflectometer deflections;
- 06 describe different approaches to analyzing data at project and network levels and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each;
- 07 describe typical problems encountered in implementing pavement management processes and approaches which can be used to overcome them;
- 08 describe the elements included in pavement preservation;
- 09 select appropriate timing and pavement preservation strategy based on existing pavement conditions;
- 10 describe different treatment techniques for routine maintenance, preventive maintenance, and minor rehabilitation.
