Sosyal hizmet çalışanları kendi çalışmaları doğrultusunda birçok farklı engeller ile karşılaşabilir. Karşılaştığı her engel farklı bir türdeki zorluğu temsil eder. Ayrıca,karşılaştıkları zorlukların üstesinden gelebilmek ve olumlu çözümler elde etmek için onlara yardımcı olabilecek birkaç teori vardır. Bu ders sosyal çalışma teorilerine ve mesleki etiğine eleştirel bir inceleme sağlar. Ek olarak,sosyal hizmet teorik bakış açılarını ve etik ilkelerini araştırırken bunların yanı sıra sosyal yapı,ideolojiler,güç,baskı ,kişisel,mesleki ve toplumsal değerlerin kesişimini giderir. Bu ders boyunca,öğrencilere kendi gelişmekte olan çalışma alanlarını ifade amaçlı fırsatlar sağlanacaktır.Sosyal hizmetin işlev ve rolleri, değişimi gerçekleştirmede genelci yaklaşımın önemi vurgulanır. Ayrıca değerler, kültürel yetkinlik, güç ve güçlendirme kavramları üzerinde durulacaktır.
